Throughout his career, Keith Baird kept the African Diaspora the primary focus of his work. While the topics of African and African American history changed during certain eras of his career. There's no question that Baird believed that a key aspect of black liberation is through education and language. Here, you can see a handful of works by Baird that highlight the unique intersection between black liberation and sociolinguistics.
These two papers by Baird are his two most well known works that showcase his appeal for people of the African Diaspora for removing "Negro" from their vocabualary when desrcibing themselves and other black people. "The Significance of Ethnic Identification for African Americans" was the first work that proposed the "African Americans" in replace of the word "Negro" most notably in academic spaces. When Baird presented this paper at the AFT Conference on December 9, 1966 in Washington D.C., it rasied Baird's status as a one of the premier black studies scholars of that time.
