About This Exhibit
The Twin Lakes Library, part of the Middle Georgia Regional Library System (TTL), is partnering with Georgia College & State University (GC) on the Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS) Digital Exhibits Pilot Program. The objective of the program is to empower libraries to use their unique digitized materials to tell the stories of their libraries and communities. Using the Omeka S platform, TTL and GC have curated an online local exhibit using content already available in the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG).
TTL and GC desire to create an exhibit framework that can be expanded upon with the forthcoming collected oral histories and digitized artifacts collected from the community during the course of our overarching Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant to document the history of Central State Hospital (CSH). This will be achieved initially by providing the contextual history of CSH, along with the contextual history of the treatment of people living with mental illness in the United States, and through the illustration of the importance and impact nursing and the associated nursing school at CSH had on the care and treatment of the patients at the institution.
The decision to focus on early nursing at CSH and the historical underpinnings that led to the formation of the CSH School of Nursing (1910-1947) was influenced by TTL’s digitized artifact, the record book of CSH student nurses, which was the most viewed item on DLG in 2019. The exhibit illuminates the evolution of nursing training in the United States through the lens of the nursing experience at CSH and how the profession evolved over the course of the late 19th Century and into the 20th Century.
